Hostiles 2017 drama adventure western Is "Hostiles" the new standard for how to make a modern-age Western? Gone are the prolific cowboys vs. Indians westerns of the 60s that I grew up watching every Saturday. Nowadays, the popularity of the Western genre has faded, but not entirely gone. Only a handful make it to the big screen each year. The modern westerns must include more oblique, socially-sensitive issues revolving around Native/White relationships, and must show sympathy for the Native characters. That said; this film does include violence. I think the body count was about 33 killed. Meh, most of us have seen worse on the silver screen. The movie is beautifully shot and well-acted. One thing is for sure about this film: It created an atmosphere from the American past that captured my attention as only the best westerns can do.
