HouseClark Simpson Awards
Who hasn't cast a wary eye on the Academy Awards' choices and omissions/snubs? Here at House Clark, we are no exception, and at long last, a project, years in the making, is finally unveiled: our own awards for the best performances and films of the year, including our own trophy design, The Simpson Award – see image above. We have started with the 2010 decade added the 2000's, and now the 1990s.
Since we take these awards seriously, and have been scoffing the Oscars for decades, we have decided to only give awards in the categories we are qualified to judge. Being Cinephiles and not industry professionals we have excluded the many technical categories that are of keen interest to the many technicians and artists the movie industry employs. The awards committee has decided to match the Academy in the three top categories: Best Picture, Best Performance by an actor, and Best Performance by an Actress. By default the Best Director award goes to the director of the Best Picture winner. Let’s not be stupid and short change the artist who put the Best Picture all together. Only in Hollywood are they that dumb.
For a quick comparison, the Academies choices are juxtaposed next to the House Clark winners and nominees. The selection committee has also included six more Bonus categories, not like any for the Academy awards. These six awards are titled; Most Annoying Performance, Best Comedy performance, Best Ensemble Cast, Most Overrated Movie, Best Juvenile Performance, and WTF did I just see? These new categories will add some diversity and much needed fun into the awards. We see no valid reason at all why “Serious Dramas” must dominate the Best Picture awards, and we promise not to shy away from awards for excellent Comedy, action-thrillers and Sci-Fi films.
This has been, and will continue to be, a refreshing experience, as we reveal hidden gems and unforgettable performances that the Academy has snubbed over the years. The Simpson Awards are based solely on entertainment excellence, and has nothing at all to do with delivering some sort of message. Here at House Clark we profoundly agree with Sam Goldwyn who famously informed his writer/directors this: “Messages are for Western Union. Just tell me a good story.” Sadly the marching orders for many movies these days has changed, and not for the better. Many, many people think that Hollywood has become too liberal minded and out of touch with the ordinary American public. As a right-of-center leaning movie fan, I agree. Social engineering has never been, nor will EVER be, the proper role of Hollywood movies. The motion pictures were invented for amusement, distraction from the grind of everyday life, and a chance to laugh, relax and have some fun.
Without further ado, Please enjoy the House Clark Simpson Awards!
