This gentle movie about retired crime fighting hero Sherlock Holmes, at age 93, is for adults searching for an alternative to the tsunami of super hero flicks. Holmes deals with aging in his own way at his country retreat overlooking the white Cliffs of Dover. He takes a young boy under his wing, and fits comfortably into the role of the wise pseudo-Grandfather as he putters about his estate tending to his honey bee hives. In this film, Holmes leaves behind the cold, pure logical man of the past and makes a compelling connection with real people. This is a real sleeper keeper with solid acting.

This flick gives you a close-up look at modern baseball, both on the field and behind the scenes in the clubhouse. Brad Pitt does a very good job of performing the lead role in this film based on a true story and book by same name. He plays Billie Beane, a Major League General Manager of a second tier team (Oakland As,) and builds a winning team by trail blazing new ideas on recruiting talent. Good casting and interesting story.
Not being a car racing fan, this film was a pleasant surprise. The film portrays the rivalry between the British (James Hunt) and Austrian (Niki Lauda) Formula 1 world champions in one of the most intense, exciting films I have watched this year. Based on a True story.
David Hyde Pierce is brilliant in this offbeat flick, as Warwick, a well-mannered, tidy host. The characters seem simple, but some will surprise with a real impact. Very effective. The plot has more twists than a tornado, yet I was still able to follow. If you like David Hyde Pierce (Dr. Niles Crane) in Frasier, then you will know some of Warwick’s mannerisms – the prissy walk, a dash of deadpan humor, a chipper smile; I expected Daphne to pop in for a quick cameo. Clever movie and does not tarry. Warning – this movie has a high spoiler alert factor.
How about some wine, Red or White?
This is the sleeper hit of 2014. Miss Meadows is without a doubt the best dressed vigilante in film history with elegant dresses, white gloves, saddle shoes with taps, and a 25 caliber purse pistol – nickel finish with faux ivory grips. She is no push over and the best quote in the movie is when she states, “I change my style for nobody.” Consider this movie a fairy tale and just go with it. A must see for quirky, independent film lovers. Toot-a-Lu.
